In Year 1 and 2, children need to understand suffixes, in particular those ending in -ing. These words change the tense of the sentence, when suffixes are added to the verbs or doing words.
Therefore, their use in sentences also changes.
For example: when the suffix -ing is added to root words, it shows that something is happening.
Children need to be able to use doing words (verbs) in the present tense that end in -ing.
However, these verbs also need auxiliary or helper verbs such as ‘is, are, am, was’ and ‘were’ so children need to remember to use these too when using -ing words.
